Jack & Grandfather Tales Everyone knows the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, but did you know that there were hundreds of tales about Jack that came over to the Southern Appalachian Mountains from England in the mid-1700s? These tales were passed down through the oral tradition from one generation to the next. Although the first Jack Tales in the area had much in the way of English influences, through the oral tradition, they slowly adapted to the Appalachian culture.
